Someone is Calling Arlington Residents Asking for Money for the Police - Don't Believe It

Police say they've gotten a report that someone is trying to scam people by pretending to collect money on behalf of police.

ARLINGTON, VA — If you get a phone call from someone requesting donations on behalf of the Arlington County Police Department, don't buy it: it's a scam.

Police are warning residents that they have received one report of a citizen receiving a call from someone requesting donations "for various public safety causes on behalf of the police department," according to a statement from the Arlington County Police Department.

The police department does not ever call to solicit funds, they say, so such a call has always been and will always be a scam.

"Citizens should be suspicious of any unsolicited phone calls which request funds or claim that you owe money," the statement adds. "Never use a phone number provided to you from the caller to verify their credibility. Do not provide personal information such as bank account numbers to anyone over the phone."
