These 14 Virginia Hospitals Are Among The Best In U.S.: Newsweek

VIRGINIA — Fourteen Virginia hospitals were ranked among the best in America by Newsweek.

The magazine’s “World’s Best Hospitals” list for 2021 ranked the top hospitals around the world, including in the United States. It’s the third year Newsweek has published the list, for which it partnered with the data firm Statista.

Eight Virginia hospitals ranked among the top 200 in the U.S., while another six hospitals were included in the overall list but did not rank among the top 200.

Here’s how Virginia hospitals were ranked on the list:

1. University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville: No. 51
2. Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church: No. 65
3. VCU Medical Center, Richmond: No. 83
4. Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria: No. 84
5. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, Williamsburg: No. 152
6. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk: No. 184
7. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax, No. 198
8. Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond: No. 199
9. Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Virginia Beach: No. 205
10. Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington: No. 211
11. Inova Loudoun Hospital, Leesburg: No. 260
12. Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, No. 264
13. Sentara - Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 294
14. Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, No. 296

In its methodology, Newsweek explained that it looked at three data sources to compile the rankings: recommendations from medical experts, results from patient surveys and medical KPIs on hospitals.

These are the top 10 hospitals in the United States, according to Newsweek.

1. Mayo Clinic - Rochester in Rochester, MN
2. Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio
3. Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston
4. The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore
5. Stanford Health Care - Stanford Hospital in Stanford, CA
6. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles
7. The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY
8. University of Michigan Hospitals - Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor, MI
9. Brigham And Women's Hospital in Boston
10. New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell in New York, NY

Hospitals in the U.S. were also recognized for infection prevention if they performed above the national average based on data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

These eight Virginia hospitals were recognized by Newsweek for infection prevention:

• VCU Medical Center, Richmond
• Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria
• Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk
• Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax

• Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk

Methodology:

The World's Best Hospital ranking lists are based on three data sources: Recommendations from medical experts (doctors, hospitals managers, health care professionals); results from patient surveys; medical KPIs on hospitals.

U.S. hospitals were also awarded as best hospitals for infection prevention if they performed above the national average based on six different measures. This recognition is based on data from Jan. 1, 2019, to Dec. 31. 2019, published by CMS.
