The soldier was killed in action on Saturday, according to military officials.
A U.S. soldier was killed in action on Saturday while conducting operations against ISIS-Khorasan in Afghanistan, Captain Bill Salvin, a spokesman for the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said in a statement.
The soldier, who was not identified, was killed late Saturday during an operation in Nangarhar Province, according to the statement.
According to Reuters, the Islamic State's offshoot in Afghanistan known as Khorasan is overwhelmingly based in Nangarhar and neighboring Kunar province. U.S. officials have said the movement has about 700 fighters but Afghan officials have put that number at about 1,500.
