Veterans Day 2020: Ceremonies, What's Open, Closed In Arlington

ARLINGTON, VA — Veterans Day is a unique holiday for a couple of reasons: 1) it's always on the same date and is therefore on a different day of the week every year, and 2) it's a borderline holiday in that some people get the day off and others don't.

Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed each Nov. 11 to honor veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It differs from Memorial Day in that Veterans Day honors all who have served, while Memorial Day specifically honors those who died in military service.

Below are the schedule changes to know for the Veterans Day holiday around Arlington:

• Arlington County Government officers and services will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
• Courts: Circuit court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court will all be closed.
• Metered Parking will not be enforced on Wednesday.
• DMV & DMV Select: All DMV offices are closed. Visit DMV's Online Services to access many available transactions.
• Human Services: Closed (Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, and Mental Health Emergency Services open 24/7/365)
• Libraries: Central Library is closed on Wednesday.
• Parks & Recreation Facilities & Programs: Administrative offices, centers, classes and leagues will be closed. Parks and outdoor amenities will be open with some restrictions.
• Permitting and Inspection Services: Permit Office is closed. No building or trade inspections will take place. Online permitting is available. System is available for customer use and application submissions.
• Public Schools: Closed.
• Sheriff's Office: Administrative offices closed on Wednesday. In-person personal visits at the ACDF are suspended due to the pandemic until further notice.
• Swimming Pools: For openings, see pool schedule.
• Treasurer's Office: Closed Nov. 11, but CAPP available for online payments.
• Trash Pickup & Recycling: Trash/Recycling/Yard Waste Curbside Pickup - Regular Wednesday routes on Nov. 11; Special Collections (Brush, Metal, E-waste) - Regular service on Nov. 11; No mulch delivery; Customer Contact Center is closed; HHM Facility and ERRC (drop-ff by appointment only) - Closed on Wednesday.

Transportation

• ART – ART 41, 42, 45, 51, 55, 77 and 87 will operate on Saturday schedules. All other ART routes will not operate and the ART customer call center will be closed.
• STAR – The STAR Call Center will be closed Nov. 11 and all trips except for dialysis will be cancelled. Call before the holiday to request a trip for Nov. 11 or the day after.
• Metrorail operates on a Saturday schedule on Wednesday. It will be open from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m.
