W-L Defeats Arlington-Rival Wakefield
The Generals maintained possession of the ball throughout most of the game and beat the Warriors, 4-1.
The Washington-Lee Varsity Field Hockey team (5-4) defeated Arlington-rival Wakefield (0-6) Monday, 4-1.
"I think the girls played pretty well, I put them in a lot of different positions, so they were trying out some new things," said head coach Beth Prange. "It wasn't always as pretty as I would have like it but it was a good win."
The Generals first goal was scored just a few minutes into the game with 27:36 to play by senior forward Catherine Pricone. Just three minutes later junior forward Carly Anders scored the second goal.

"I thought it felt good, we were working on specific goals and a lot of people were trying new things and new positions," said junior midfielder Adrianna Gorsky.
W-L led 2-0 at the half.

"We were focusing on playing right-side because that's strong-stick side and whenever we got the ball on the left we'd try to switch it to right and so I think that's what helped us to maintain possession and quick passes," Gorsky said.
Gorsky scored the Generals third goal with 6:30 remaining in the game. Before the Generals final goal by senior midfielder Amy Severs with 4:10 left to play, the Warriors scored.
W-L had 17 shots and four goals, and Wakefield had one shot and one goal.
Prange said she was happy with W-L's performance both offensively and defensively and how they took to the different positions.
"It's just about the experience, most of us are young, the majority of us are juniors and we still have another year so it's just good to work on new things to add for other games," Gorsky said.
Although the Generals maintained possession of the ball for almost the entire game, the Warriors goal was their first of the entire season. Wakefield doesn't field a Junior Varsity or Freshman Field Hockey team, so all players are on the varsity team.
The Generals travel to Centerville, Friday and Langley, Tuesday before returning home to face their other Arlington rival, Yorktown on Sept. 30.
