Wakefield High Student Receives Full-Ride College Scholarship

Wakefield High School student Sara Arango-Rojas receives a full-ride scholarship after being nominated by her virtual tutor in Tennessee.

ARLINGTON, VA — Wakefield High School student Sara Arango-Rojas received a full-ride college scholarship to Sewanee: The University of the South, after being nominated for the prestigious Posse Scholarship by her online tutor.

An employee of SoFlo Tutors, Kya Lin of Nashville, Tennessee, nominated Arango-Rojas after establishing a tutor/mentor relationship with her online.

“I could see that she was someone with a great mindset, and a person who was amicable and easy to talk to, and I knew that she would be a great fit for the program and that she could offer a lot to her posse if she won," Lin said, in a release.

Once Arango-Rojas was nominated, she participated in a highly competitive, multi-level interview process

“Having somebody that’s always in your corner, and especially someone who went throughthe same process that you did is very encouraging," Arango-Rojas said, in a release. "It makes you feel like you have somebody you can lean on. Kya’s always been my cheerleader.”

In addition to paying all of Arango-Rojas's tuition at Sewanee for four years, the Posse Scholarship includes leadership resources, university preparation courses and a lifetime membership in the "posse" community.

“One of the core values of SoFlo is student-tutor chemistry. ... But Sara’s story goes above and beyond," said Adam Schlomi, SoFlo Tutors founder, in a release. "Here is someone who made such a lasting impression on her tutor that Kya was able to unexpectedly change her life. Character is how you behave when no one is watching, and Sara shows real character by impressing and inspiring her tutor even when she had no reason to.”
