What's Open, Closed For Presidents Day 2024 In Arlington
There will be various closures for the Presidents Day holiday as well as events to celebrate George Washington events in Northern Virginia.
ARLINGTON, VA — Presidents Day, also known as George Washington's Birthday, will provide a three-day weekend for m any employees and students, and this year the holiday falls on Monday, Feb. 19.
While many services will be closed for the holiday, residents can get out and enjoy several observances to celebrate the first president. George Washington's Mount Vernon will free admission on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 19, and Thursday, Feb. 22. Tickets will be limited and distributed on site. Another Presidents Day weekend event will be the George Washington Birthday Parade in Alexandria.
The federal holiday will prompt closures of government offices, schools and other services on Feb. 19, while other services like transit may have schedule changes. Here are the openings and closings to know in Arlington County.

Arlington County government offices: Closed Monday, Feb. 19

Courts: The Arlington Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court will be closed on Monday, Feb. 19.
Human Services: Closed on Monday, Feb. 19. Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, and Mental Health Emergency Services open 24/7/365.
Parking: Permit parking is always in effect unless specifically noted on the sign. Meters are not enforced on holidays.
Libraries: Arlington Public Libraries will be closed Monday, Feb. 19.
Trash Pickup & Recycling:
- Recycling/Trash/Organics Curbside Routes: Regular collection on Monday, Feb. 19
- Special Collections (brush, metal, E-waste): Regular collection on Monday, Feb. 19
- Mulch Delivery: None on Monday, Feb. 19.
- Customer Contact Center: Closed Monday, Feb. 19
- Household Hazards/Electronics Drop-Off Facility: Closed Monday, Saturday through Monday.
- Earth Products Drop-off Yard: Closed Monday, Feb. 19.
Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed Monday, Feb. 19. Visit DMV’s Online Services to access many available transactions.
Post offices: Closed Monday, Feb. 19.
Transportation:
- METRO will be open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, 7 a.m. to midnight on Sunday, and 5 a.m. to midnight on Monday. On the Red Line, there will be single tracking between Van Ness and Friendship Heights from Saturday to Monday. Trains operate every 18 minutes between Glenmont and Shady Grove. On the Blue Line, trains run every 18 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Foggy Bottom Saturday and Sunday. On the Orange and Silver Lines, trains single track between Smithsonian and Federal Center SW and run every 18 minutes Saturday and Sunday. Normal service is planned on the Yellow and Green Lines.
- ART – ART 41, 42, 45, 51, 55, 77 and 87 will operate on Saturday schedules. All other ART routes will not operate.
- STAR – Office and Call Center closed. Call in advance to book rides for holiday and the day after.
Parks & Recreation Facilities & Programs: All community centers, administrative offices and classes are closed Monday, Feb. 19.

Animal Welfare League of Arlington: Closed Monday, Feb. 19. The Arlington County Animal Control team can be reached for emergencies at 703-931-9241.
Permitting and Inspection Services:
- Permit Arlington Center is closed
- No building or trade inspections
- Permit Arlington is available for customer use and application submissions
Sheriff's Office: Administrative Offices closed on Monday, Feb. 19. Fingerprinting for the public and county employees are open Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. See detention center visiting hours.
