Woman Dies After Being Hit By Falling Tree Limb In Arlington

A huge limb from an oak tree fell on a woman walking on a trail June 27 in an Arlington park, fatally injuring her, authorities said.

ARLINGTON, VA — A woman died Thursday, June 27, after she was hit by a large limb that fell from an 80-foot oak tree in an Arlington park. Authorities have not yet identified the victim. The mishap was reported about 2 p.m. on a trail in the 2600 block of South Walter Reed Drive.

Arlington County officials said the woman was walking along a path in Lucky Run Park when she was struck by a limb from an 80-foot oak, WTOP.com reports. The woman was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where she later died.

“Safety is our number one priority. The county is investigating further to determine as many details of what happened as possible,” officials said in the statement to WTOP.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the limb to fall, and determine an exact cause of death in the case.

"It's tragic, especially somebody's who's out and enjoying Arlington County's great parks and services that we have here, to lose their life," Ashley Savage, spokesperson for Arlington County Police, told NBC Washington. "This is a tragic accident but we're going to completely investigate this incident."
