2020 U.S. Census Results: The Changing Demographics Of Ashburn

The 2020 census shows an America that is becoming more diverse, with the Hispanic/Latino population growing faster than any other.

ASHBURN, VA — The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the United States, with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic/Latino community.

Ashburn's census data reflected these national trends on a local level. In Ashburn, the number of white residents decreased while the number of Black, Asian, and Hispanic residents all increased.

In Ashburn, the number of white residents decreased by 6.35 percent, according to the 2020 census. Now, there are 26,110 white people in Ashburn who represent 56 percent of Ashburn, which now has a population of 46,349.

Ashburn's Hispanic population grew by 24 percent in the last 10 years, according to census data. There are now 5,264 Hispanic people in Ashburn, representing Ashburn's third-largest ethnic group.

The Hispanic boom accounted for almost half of the overall U.S. population growth, which was the slowest since the Great Depression. By comparison, the non-Hispanic growth rate over the decade was 4.3 percent. The Hispanic share of the U.S. population grew to 18.7 percent of the U.S. population, up from 16.3 percent in 2010.

The share of the white population fell from 63.7 percent in 2010 to 57.8 percent in 2020, the lowest on record, driven by falling birthrates among white women compared with Hispanic and Asian women. The number of non-Hispanic white people shrank from 196 million in 2010 to 191 million.

In Ashburn, the Asian population saw the largest increase among ethnic groups. The number of Asian residents in Ashburn grew by 34.55 percent to 8,739. They represent Ashburn's second-largest ethnic group, behind the white population.

Meanwhile, Ashburn's Black population grew slightly. The census showed that the number of Black people in Ashburn grew by 7.27 percent to 3,542 people.
