Leesburg Police Warn Residents About Increase in Check Fraud Cases

Leesburg, VA (June 12, 2026) – The Leesburg Police Department is alerting residents and businesses to a recent increase in check fraud incidents reported within the community.

Several recent investigations have involved checks that were mailed and subsequently altered, forged, or fraudulently negotiated. While the investigations remain ongoing, the incidents serve as an important reminder for residents and businesses to take precautions when sending checks through the mail.

To help reduce the risk of check fraud, the Leesburg Police Department recommends:

Residents who mail checks are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly review account statements for any unusual activity. Individuals who believe they may have been the victim of check fraud should contact their financial institution and file a police report as soon as possible.

The Leesburg Police Department continues to work with federal, state, and local partners regarding these incidents. Additional information will be released as appropriate.
