Available animals may include dogs, cats, kittens, rabbits, small pets and livestock.

New this year, every adopted cat and dog will go home with a three-month supply of flea and tick preventative and a large bag of pet food. Adopted dogs will also receive a three-month supply of heartworm preventative, sponsored by the Friends of Loudoun County Animal Services.

Adopters will also receive giveaways including pet supplies, treats and toys.

The shelter's standard adoption screening process will remain in place, though in a release announcing the event, the county said most adoptions can be completed the same day.

Dogs, cats and rabbits adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered and microchipped. Dogs and cats receive age-appropriate vaccinations, and adopted dogs come with a voucher for four free group training sessions.

The Loudoun event is part of NBCUniversal Local's nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative, now in its 12th year. The campaign has helped more than 1 million pets find homes, according to the county.
