Local realtor Ken Courter organizes effort to feed the hungry in Loudoun County
In early April, local realtor Ken Courter was in his church at St. David's Episcopal in Ashburn. He read an insert in the bulletin describing their Month of Abundance food drive to collect food in support of Loudoun Interfaith Relief. He was at first shocked at the statistics regarding the hungry in Loudoun County, but then he decided to do something about it, even beyond what his own church outreach ministry was already doing.
Ashburn Cares is a community effort started by Ken to raise awareness of the need to stock the shelves of Loudoun Interfaith Relief's food closet. Now just a few weeks later, he has rallied over one hundred neighbors in and around Ashburn to participate in the Ashburn Cares Food Drive . He's learned a great deal about the hunger around us and about the care and compassion of this community to rally behind this effort. "What a remarkably intelligent and generous group of citizens", says Ken. " With just a bit of encouragement, they have donated nearly $5,000 to date. In addition, the Darryl and Tiffany Tapp family have matched dollar for dollar for a total of $10,000 collected for LIR. "And that's just the cash donations....food items will be collected next weekend May 7th and 8th in many local drop-offs around Ashburn.
On May 7th and 8th you will notice collection boxes in many neighborhoods. The attached flyer provides details of the neighborhood and street locations of the 20 Donation Boxes. Please make a pledge or donate items to help us feed our Loudoun children who need help during the summer when school is out. Make copies of the flyer and post them anywhere you can think of. With enough promotion we will fill every shelf at the food pantry.

"Ashburn Cares has been an amazing success. It is still evolving. I’d like it to eventually help with clothing, school supplies and possibly eyeglasses."
