Ashburn Man Assaults Officer, Arrested After Car Chase: Police

An Ashburn man is in jail after he punched an officer and led deputies on a chase through Loudoun County, authorities said.

ASHBURN, VA — An Ashburn man was arrested on Friday after leading Loudoun County deputies on a chase from Loudoun County Parkway to Route 28.

The man, who was later identified as Ronald Smith, fled deputies after assaulting a police officer, according to a press release from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Department.

A deputy initially approached Smith at a gas station, after authorities received a call reporting an intoxicated driver who almost hit a car. After the deputy approached the vehicle, a struggle ensued. Smith struck the deputy multiple times, closed the deputy's hand in the car door, and drove away, according to the press release.

Police chased Smith from Loudoun County Parkway, to Route 7, and Route 28. The chase ended when deputies in the area damaged the tires of Smith's car, and he lost control of the vehicle, according to police reports. The Sheriff's Department says that Smith then attempted to flee on foot near the Dulles Toll Road.

The pursuit ended near the Dulles Toll Road, though authorities stated that Smith still did not cooperate with the deputies.

Smith was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, felony eluding, reckless driving, obstruction of justice, and driving without a license. He was also wanted in Fairfax County for reckless driving and felony eluding, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Smith and the deputy were treated at local hospitals for their injuries. They were subsequently released.

Smith is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
