Biden Loses Only 3 Precincts In Super Tuesday Loudoun Landslide

Former Vice President Joe Biden won the Super Tuesday Democratic primary election by a wide margin in Loudoun County.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA —Former Vice President Joe Biden won the Super Tuesday Democratic primary election by a wide margin in Loudoun County, as was the case in jurisdictions across Northern Virginia. Loudoun voters came out in huge numbers to vote in the primary, almost doubling the county's previous record for a primary vote total.

Biden performed strongly in all the jurisdictions in Northern Virginia. Prince William County was his strongest in the region on Super Tuesday, with Loudoun County following close behind in terms of percentage of votes won.

In Loudoun, Biden won 36,209 votes, or 50.55 percent compared with 18,087 votes, or 25.25 percent, for second-place finisher Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Prince William and Loudoun counties were the only jurisdictions in Northern Virginia where Biden passed the 50 percent mark.

In all of Virginia, Biden received 705,800 votes, or 53.3 percent, with Sanders coming in second place with 306,023 votes, or 23.1 percent, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) finishing third with 142,470 votes, or 10.8 percent. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who dropped out of the presidential race on Wednesday and endorsed Biden, received less than 10 percent of the vote in Virginia.

Voters turned out in record numbers in Virginia on Super Tuesday, including in Loudoun County. With votes totaling more than 1.3 million, this year's Democratic primary in Virginia far exceeded the 782,900 votes cast in the 2016 primary when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton beat Sanders in a landslide. The turnout also surpassed the previous record of 986,000 votes cast in the 2008 Democratic primary.

In Loudon County, 71,632 votes were cast in Tuesday's primary, almost double the turnout of 36,151 in 2016 and more than twice as many as the 34,984 votes cast in the county in the 2008 Democratic primary.

Biden lost only three of Loudoun's 99 precincts. Sanders won the Oak Grove and Rolling Ridge precincts in the Sterling area and the Brandon Park precinct near Leesburg.

Biden performed exceptionally well in wealthier communities along the Potomac River. In the Belmont Ridge precinct, Biden won 62.4 percent of the vote, followed by Bloomberg with 17.3 percent. In the River Creek precinct, Biden captured 61.7 percent of the vote, with Bloomberg coming in second place at 17.9 percent.

Rep. Jennifer Wexton, a Democrat who represents Loudoun in Congress and endorsed Biden, celebrated the former Delaware senator's victory.

"Joe Biden has the heart, experience, and the vision to not only beat Donald Trump in November— but to heal our nation, bring us together, and build a future we can all believe in," Wexton tweeted Tuesday night.

In 2018, Wexton defeated Barbara Comstock to win Virginia's 10th congressional district, a seat that had been held by Republicans since Frank Wolf defeated the incumbent Democrat, Joe Fischer, in 1980.
