The League of American Bicyclists began Bike to Work Day in 1956, and it has been celebrated in the Washington metro area since 2001. The event is intended to support existing bikers and help encourage and welcome new bike commuters. According to organizers, 16 percent of recent Bike to Work survey respondents said they never biked to work before joining a Bike to Work Day event: more than 1,000 commuters who tried bicycling to work for the very first time through the annual celebration.
