The expo held Oct 9 in Ashburn housed 27 exhibitors, each sharing minute details of how to be eco- friendly. A girl’s scout table informed visitors of the 3 R’s- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. They displayed prolonged decomposition of such environment hazardous items like plastic, wool, paper, etc. For e.g. it takes 1,000,000 yrs (or more) for a glass bottle or Styrofoam peanuts to decompose, 450 yrs for plastic bottle or baby diapers, 200-400 yrs for aluminium and around 1000 long yrs for plastic to decompose.

The 5th Graders highlighted the idea of reusing these products more appropriately such that instead of dumping an old plastic water bottle, it could be used as a wind spinner, an old plastic cup could be given a shape of pencil cup or plant starter.

An emphasis on using alternate transportation was made by Loudoun County department of construction and waste management. Displaying local bus service leaflets, Kate Glass, said, “We want to create awareness about commuter service, suppose one goes to D.C. then why drive, take bus it is so easy.” Commuting by bus not only saves time and money but also helps in keeping the environment clean by reducing carbon emission.

As an increased number of visitors attended the Expo, Chairman ED Valaer Jr, said, “This expo is doing better than the previous one. We’ve received 50 visitors. Our Nissan car is a biggest hit. It works on electricity and saves gas prices. We are planning to hold panel discussions in our next one.”
