Shimmer in the Sky

As the big day gets closer we wait for the ecstatic fireworks. In my home country people celebrate their patriotic day by indulging in kite flying.

Each year as Independence Day gets closer we wait for the dusk to fall to witness ecstatic firework display taking place across different regions in the United States.

The beautiful shimmering colors in an otherwise dim sky make this patriotic day one of the most awaited ones throughout the year.

A large crowd in the parking and curbside area clearly indicates the vigor and zest of visitors gathered to watch dazzling firework in their communities.

Dressed up  in summer wear, bringing mats, chairs, drinks and all that is required to make their limited stay at the location as comfortable as possible; viewers particularly kids are delighted.

The effect of aerial fireworks and different sparkling shades it produces makes one wishes that the night never ends.

While the United States commemorates adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4; my home country, too, celebrates its liberation from the rule of Great Britain in the month of August, but with a difference.

Conventionally, people on this national holiday there express jubilation by indulging in the most admired sport among men: kite flying.  

Completely occupied in this economical activity, kite maniacs are found on rooftops of houses or play areas mastering the skills of cutting each other’s strings and cheering their momentary triumphs. The azure sky flooded with kites of different colors and shapes is a sight worth watching. 

Different cultural factions may have distinct ways of marking their politically significant day and collectively rejoicing the spirit of being free.  

But sadly in this age of smartphones, there are still many places in the world where people are persistently struggling to attain their share of liberty, justice, peace and equality.
