Briar Woods and Broad Run Dominate in Saturday Football Action

The Falcons and Spartans beat their respective opponents in weekend games.

Although the torrential rains finally stopped and the area football fields dried up enough to finally play some games on Saturday, Briar Woods and Broad Run still flooded the scoreboards as they outscored their opponents by a combined 85-3 and came away with two important wins.

The Falcons bounced back in a big way from last week's loss to the Spartans by overwhelming Park View 53-3. Coming off their first shut-out loss since 2008, the Falcon offense wasted little time getting on the board Saturday, as Trace McSorley connected with Alex Carter on an 80-yard touchdown pass in the game's opening minutes. The Falcons never relented, and scored on both offense and defense as they ran out to a 39-3 halftime lead.

Running back Cory Colder had a big day scoring on runs of 65-yards and 12-yards in the first quarter, and finished the game with 13 carries for 117 yards. McSorley was impressive after a tough outing last week against Broad Run. In addition to the touchdown strike to Carter, McSorley connected with Matt Rolin for an 18-yard touchdown, and also tallied a 14-yard rushing score. McSorley finished the day completing 16 of 22 passes for 274 yards.

The Falcon defense smothered Park View all day, holding them to a remarkable negative 40 yards rushing, and even got involved in the scoring action. Joe Rizzardi recorded two safeties in the game, and Darryl Gadsen added an interception return for a touchdown.

Broad Run was well-prepared for their first AAA opponent of the season as they shutout visiting Woodbridge 32-0. The defense was simply dominant in holding the Vikings to just 93 total yards of offense for the game. The usual cast of characters once again led the Spartan offense: Derril Thomas rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, Connor Jessop passed for 187 yards and a touchdown, and Dorian Jenkins hauled in two receptions for 94 yards.

The win provides the Spartans with a little bit of "street cred" in the AAA football world, as the Vikings had made the playoffs the last seven years.

Next week the Falcons head to Dominion for their first road game of the season, and the Spartans head to Prince William County for a game against Forest Park.
