Broad Run and Stone Bridge Football Claim Historic Wins

Ashburn teams go three for three as all local high schools win at least a piece of their respective district championships.

The Broad Run and Stone Bridge football teams each pulled off what can be described as historic victories Friday night, but for different reasons. The Spartans' 48-7 win over Freedom secured the team a share of its first ever Cedar Run district championship, as the team finished in a three-way tie with Osbourn and Battlefield atop the district standings. The Bulldogs made a little bit of their own history by winning their seventh straight Liberty District championship with a 39-8 win over Fairfax. [.]

Both the Spartans and Bulldogs captured early leads and were never really threatened in their respective games. The Spartans (8-2, 3-1 in the district) raced out to a 41-0 halftime lead with running back Derril Thomas scoring four touchdowns and defensive end Caleb Lindsey returning an interception 55 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Connor Jessop was nearly flawless, completing 9 of 12 passses for 200 yards and a score to Thomas, while adding a 26-yard rushing touchdown of his own.

This was the Spartan's first season playing at the AAA level in the Cedar Run District; a change sparked by an increase in the school's student population moved them up from the AA Dulles District. The victory and share of the district title are even more impressive considering that district foe Battlefield won last year's AAA Division 6 state championship, and Osbourn also made it to last season's state semifinals.

Broad Run claimed the second seed in the AAA Divison 5 Northwest Region playoffs, and as a result will enjoy a bye during the first week.

Stone Bridge (9-1, 7-0) also had a running back with four touchdowns Friday night, as racked up 123 yards on the ground with the four scores to lead the Bulldog romp. Quarterback Ryan Burns chipped in with 214 yards through the air, including a 41-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Stan Johnson, and no interceptions.

The win over Fairfax continues the Bulldogs' decade of dominance in area district competition. The Bulldogs have won ten straight district championships, dating back to before they moved up to AAA and the Liberty District.

The Bulldog win earned the team the number one seed in the Division 5 Northern Region playoffs, and the team will host the eighth-seeded Langley Saxons. Stone Bridge beat Langley 28-0 earlier this season.

The Bulldogs join Briar Woods as local number one seeds. The Falcons host Park View in the first round, a team Briar Woods beat 53-3 in the second week of the season.
