Celebrating Independence Day Safely

The 4th of July is just days away. As we fire up the grill for our Independence Day BBQ, if you have purchased consumer fireworks, remember to celebrate safely!

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimate 9,600 people were injured due to fireworks on Independence Day in 2011. The National Council on Fireworks Safety has several tips to ensure a fun and injury free 4th of July Celebration:

Know your fireworks; Read the warning labels and performance descriptions before igniting.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your alcohol for after the show.

Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks.

Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks.

Fireworks should only be used outdoors.

Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.

Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.

Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.

Never relight a “dud” firework.  Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.

Never attempt to alter or modify consumer fireworks and use them only in the manner in which they were intended.

Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.

Most states and counties have guidelines of what consumers may purchase and what a licensed professional can. Depending on where you live, certain fireworks are deemed illegal for consumers and/or professionals. Checking with your municipalities is important to ensure you are adhering to the law in your area. There are always professional firework displays; where you and your loved ones can enjoy the show and not run the risk of someone getting injured or worse. Remember that even Sparklers can start a fire, burn or injure someone. Please remember to use common sense, follow the laws in your area and have a safe and fun Independence Day Celebration!
