7th Annual Walk for Autism

The Seventh Annual Walk for Autism-Virginia will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at the Prince William County Fairgrounds in Manassas.  The 5K Run will begin at 8:00, and the Walk at 11:00.  Online registration is available at www.walkforautismva.org.  There is a registration fee of $10 for an individual walker or $25 for a family to walk.  The fee for the 5K Run is $25.

This family-oriented event will offer something for everyone.  Lots of fun for the kids with moon bounces, a children’s train, face painting, DJ, and much more!  In addition, our Resource Fair will feature a variety of vendors providing valuable information about their services and products, and our Silent Auction will have items from local and national businesses for attendees to bid on.

Autism is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the United States.  More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than AIDS, diabetes, and cancer combined.  Autism is a complex disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.  Early intervention and education are key to helping children with autism improve.  Unfortunately, the cost of therapy can be overwhelming, as it is usually not covered by insurance.  Over the past six years, the Walk for Autism-Virginia has raised over $300,000.  These funds have helped families throughout Northern Virginia deal with the financial burden of treating autism through the award of mini-grants.

Our event takes place on USA Weekend’s “Make a Difference Day” and we invite everyone to come out to the Fairgrounds at 10624 Dumfries Road, Manassas on October 22 and join us in making a difference in the life of a child with autism.  We are still accepting corporate sponsorships, vendors for the Resource Fair, and items for our Silent Auction.   Volunteers are also needed to help us the day of the Walk.  For more information, to register, or to make a tax deductable donation please visit: www.walkforautismva.org or contact Barbara Wagner, Walk Coordinator at 703.859.0030.
