Guest Science Experts To Address Loudoun County Schools

Several of the nation's top experts in science, math and engineering will be at Loudoun Schools ahead of the USA Science & Engineering Fest.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA—Several of the nation's top experts in the science, math and engineering disciplines will be guest lecturers for a day at several Loudoun County schools in the next few weeks. Their appearances are in conjunction with the April 7-8 USA Science & Engineering Festival at DC's Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place NW.

They're among the more than 200 scientists and engineers going to schools throughout the country as part of the festival's "Nifty Fifty" program. Its mission is "to ignite students’ passion for science and engineering." Here's a look at who will visit the Loudoun County Schools:

Feb 12, 10 a.m.
Dr. Joel Martin, GMU Biomechanist, explores how fitness, science and engineering intersect.

Riverside High School, 19019 Upper Belmont Place, Leesburg, VA

Feb 27, 12:30 p.m.
Dr. Ellen Stofan, Planetary Geologist and Former NASA Chief Scientist, will discuss exploring the solar system and the universe to find if life exists beyond Earth.

Harper Park Middle School, 701 Potomac Station Dr, Leesburg, VA

March 23, noon
Dr. Padhu Seshaiyer, GMU Mathematician, will help students stop saying “I hate math!”

Potomac Falls High School, 46400 Algonkian Parkway, Potomac Falls, VA

The festival was founded by entrepreneur Larry Bock and Lockheed Martin executives to address what they consider a severe shortage in science and tech talent. Its aim is to "encourage youth to pursue careers in science and engineering by celebrating science the way we celebrate Hollywood celebrities, professional athletes and pop stars."

The guest lecturers, such as the ones to visit Loudoun County, include inventors, policy makers, actors, educators, researchers, explorers, video game developers, alien hunters, astronauts, doctors, and more.
