Kill Your Slice – Improve Your Path

This month, 1757's golf pro helps straighten out that shot.

Do you struggle with a slice or have a swing path that moves out to in? In order to straighten-out your shots, you need to improve your swing path.

Swing path is simply the path that the club head travels from the top of the backswing to the finish. You want the club head to approach the golf ball from the inside and then travel down the target line for a short period of time with a square clubface and return back to the inside of the target line naturally during follow-through.

Many of the golfers I see don’t have the club traveling “down the line” long enough after impact.  They tend to have the club get closer to their body immediately after impact, which causes the slice.

To get a more user-friendly swing path, use this drill:

  • Grab a 12 ounce or 16 ounce water bottle and lay it on the ground with the cap of the bottle pointed at your target.
  • Now grip your club towards the lower part of the grip. You are gripping down on the club so that your club head hovers above the water bottle.
  • Start with your club head even with the base of the bottle (the base of the bottle represents the golf ball) while hovering the club just above the bottle.
  • Now start working your swing in slow motion to where you can see the club head approaching the base of the bottle from the inside. Swing the club head directly across the bottle from the base to the top. Once the club passes the top of the bottle, then and only then should the club head start to get closer to your body and complete its rotation to the finish.

You will notice that it is easier to get the club head traveling straight across the length of the water bottle if you are transferring your weight laterally to your front leg.
