NoVA Leads In Coronavirus Cases, Tidewater in Hospitalizations
New coronavirus cases on Thursday totaled 250 in Virginia's northern region, 191 in the southwest region and 173 in the eastern region.
VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 863 additional coronavirus cases Thursday. The cumulative total of cases is up to 109,882. There were 17 new deaths reported Thursday, bringing the total in Virginia to 2,427. There have been 8,998 coronavirus hospitalizations to date.
Virginia's latest 7-day average of new cases is 894, down from the state's peak average of 1,198 cases on Aug. 8. Part of that peak can be attributed to a backlog of cases from two days, causing a record-high 2,015 new cases to be reported on Aug. 7. Since then, there have been three days with new cases above 1,000 and 10 days with new cases below 1,000.
On a regional level, Thursday's new cases included 250 in the northern region, 191 in the southwest region, 173 in the eastern region, 143 in the central region and 106 in the northwest region. The 7-day average of new cases in Northern Virginia now stands at 241 compared to an average of 187 cases a day two weeks ago.

The statewide positive average of PCR tests stood at 6.5 percent on Aug. 16, the most recent figure provided by the VDH, down from 6.7 percent on Aug. 15. As of Thursday, 1,418,335 tests had been completed in Virginia, an increase of 15,864 from Tuesday.
Current hospitalizations stand at 1,266 as of Thursday, up 23 from Wednesday. The eastern region continues to account for the most hospitalizations with 451, followed by the northern region with 283, the central region with 256, the southwest region with 161 and northwest region with 115.

The 7-day average of hospitalizations in Northern Virginia now stands at 292, the highest average for the region in nearly two months.
According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, 14,091 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals statewide.
The current hospitalizations include 148 patients on ventilators and 276 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients remains steady at 20 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 74 percent. The 2019 average ICU occupancy for Virginia was 67 percent.
No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours. From Aug. 8 to 17, at least one hospital reported difficulty obtaining PPE.
Here are the latest case updates for our coverage areas between Wednesday and Thursday:
- Alexandria: 3,186 cases, 287 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of 21 cases.
- Arlington County: 3,310 cases, 447 hospitalizations, 137 deaths; increase of 17 cases, five hospitalizations and two deaths.
- Fairfax County: 17,330 cases, 2,002 hospitalizations, 539 deaths; increase of 100 cases, 15 hospitalizations and one death.
- Fairfax City: 105 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases and two hospitalizations.
- Falls Church: 64 cases, 10 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of one case, one hospitalization and one death.
- Loudoun County: 5,614 cases, 363 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; increase of 34 cases and two hospitalizations.
- Manassas: 1,734 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 23 deaths; increase of five cases.
- Manassas Park: 546 cases, 52 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of four cases and one hospitalization.
- Prince William County: 10,100 cases, 825 hospitalizations, 179 deaths; increase of 66 cases and one hospitalization.
- Fredericksburg: 439 cases, 45 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of eight cases.
- Spotsylvania County: 1,662 cases, 105 hospitalizations, 35 deaths; increase of 13 cases and one hospitalization.
- Stafford County: 1,556 cases, 129 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 13 cases and two hospitalizations.
