NoVA's Positive Coronavirus Test Average, Hospitalizations Rising

Northern Virginia's seven-day average of positive PCR tests stands at 6.9 percent compared to 5.0 percent Oct. 13, according to VDH data.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,235 new coronavirus cases Friday, nearly 300 fewer cases than were reported Thursday.

With the drop in cases, the latest seven-day average fell from 1,546 Thursday to 1,499 Friday. A month ago on Oct. 13, the seven-day average was 1,089 cases.

Northern Virginia's positive case average has seen an increase after being relatively steady from mid-June to October. The latest average is 397.2 daily cases, compared to 254.7 on Oct. 13.

By region, new cases include 392 in the southwest region (423.9 seven-day average), 318 in the northern region (397.3 seven-day average), 219 in the northwest region (215 seven-day average), 160 in the central region (245.9 seven-day average), and 146 in the eastern region (216.9 seven-day average).

Hospitalizations are another health metric that has seen a recent upward trend. There are 1,296 current COVID-19 patients as of Friday, and the seven-day average is 1,189.6. The average of patients on Oct. 13 was 961.4.

By region, there are 350 patients in the northern region, 323 in the southwest region, 252 in the central region, 210 in the eastern region, and 161 in the northwest region.

In the northern region, the seven-day average for hospitalizations stood at 299.0 Friday compared to 216.7 a month ago on Oct. 13.

According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, the 1,296 current COVID-19 patients across Virginia include 115 on ventilators and 258 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 28 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 82 percent. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

There were 27 new deaths reported to the Virginia Department of Health as of Friday. The seven-day average of new deaths reported is 14.7 compared to an average of 11.6 deaths on Oct. 13.

The statewide seven-day average of positive PCR tests is 6.5 percent as of Nov. 9. The southwest region's average is 9.6 percent, while the northern region's average is 6.9 percent. Regions below that statewide average are the northwest region with 5.2 percent, eastern region with 5.6 percent and the central region with 5.8 percent. Across Virginia, 2,864,009 PCR tests have been completed to date, an increase of 10,212 from Thursday.

  • Alexandria: 4,602 cases, 336 hospitalizations, 76 deaths; increase of 29 cases
  • Arlington County: 5,191 cases, 558 hospitalizations, 155 deaths; increase of 33 cases and six hospitalizations
  • Fairfax County: 26,140 cases, 2,393 hospitalizations, 610 deaths; increase of 135 cases, 14 hospitalizations and one death
  • Fairfax City: 178 cases, 16 hospitalizations, eight deaths; no changes
  • Falls Church: 83 cases, 14 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of one case
  • Loudoun County: 8,642 cases, 515 hospitalizations, 135 deaths; increase of 20 cases, four hospitalizations and one death

  • Manassas Park: 677 cases, 59 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of one hospitalization
