One Dead, One Injured In Weekend Townhome Fire In Sterling

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fatal fire that happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday.

STERLING, VA — The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of an early-morning fire in a Sterling townhouse that left one dead and another injured. Loudoun County Fire and Rescue responded to the fire just before 3 a.m. Sunday after 911 callers indicated someone was possibly trapped inside the home.

According to a department report, firefighters arrived at the 200 block of Giles Place to find smoke coming from a two-story townhouse. Crews found one adult outside the residence with non-life threatening burn injuries, the report said, and was immediately transported by ambulance to the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital.

Firefighters attacked the fire from both the interior and exterior of the townhouse while continuing to search for additional residents. Fire and rescue crews located an adult male who was brought outside to waiting EMS crews, who immediately began advanced life support care.

The man was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. One resident refused medical treatment on the scene.

Crews were able to contain the fire, avoiding damage to the adjacent townhouses. Loudoun County was assisted by fire and rescue crews from Cascades, Kincora, Sterling Park, Ashburn, Leesburg and Fairfax County.

The fire continues to be under investigation by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
