Phony Check Scam Victimizes Resident in Ashburn: Police

The victim wanted to sell a phone, and the buyer sent a check for more than requested, with the balance deposited in another account: LCSO.

ASHBURN, VA — A somewhat elaborate but nonetheless common phony check scam victimized a resident late last month in the 21000 block of Victorias Cross Terrace, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

The resident listed a phone for sale via an application called CLOSE5. Someone got in touch and agreed to buy the phone.

The suspect sent a cashier's check for more than the asking price and requested the rest of the money be transferred via Western Union to an account in California. So the victim cashed the check and did just that.
