Sterling United Methodist Church Potato Drop
Sterling United Methodist Church received 42,000 lbs of potatoes from Society of St. Andrew, as a part of their potato and produce project.

Sterling United Methodist Church (SUMC) coordinated another Potato Drop this year. SUMC received 42,000 lbs of potatoes from Society of St. Andrew, as a part of their potato and produce project. In late November, 150 volunteers repackaged most of the potatoes from 50 lb. bags to 5 and 10 lb. bags.
These bags were then distributed to 28 food banks, schools, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Deliveries were made as far away as Winchester, Virginia and Crisfield, Maryland.
According to Church Ministries Administrator Phil Mohr, 184 local needy Sterling families came to the church on the day of the Potato Drop and also received 5 and 10 lb. bags of potatoes. In early December, 52 more local families in the SUMC Grace Ministry received potatoes.
The potato distribution by site and number of pounds is as follows:
