LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — One student was hospitalized and another was criminally charged after an assault at Independence High School in Ashburn last week, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities have not identified either student by name due to Virginia laws protecting victims and minors who are accused of crimes.

The victim was taken to a hospital on Wednesday with serious injuries, authorities said.

After an investigation, another student was charged with aggravated malicious wounding. He was taken into custody on Thursday and held at the Loudoun County Juvenile Detention Center.

The assault occurred around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, police said. School officials told the school resource officer about the assault and opened an investigation.
