Thieves Targeting Purses In Ashburn: Police

Thieves are targeting vehicles whose owners momentarily leave them while dropping off kids at school or running errands in Ashburn: LCSO.

ASHBURN, VA — Thieves are targeting vehicles whose owners momentarily leave them while dropping off kids at school or running errands, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. Police say the thieves are taking purses to obtain identification and checkbooks used at local banks immediately after the crime.

Not only that, but it could be part of a growing trend. Detectives with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office are working with other agencies to see whether the recent spate of such thefts in the county is related to similar cases in Washington, DC.

Meanwhile, police have offered some tips to avoid thefts such as the ones that happened last week:

• Ensure that your vehicle is locked and secured, even when running errands and dropping off children at day care centers or schools.

• Never leave your car unlocked when unattended, even if it is for a short time, and remove any valuables.

• Please remember to keep checks and identity documents securely with you or at home. Do not leave them in a vehicle where someone has a moment or chance to take them.

• If you have checks, money, credit cards, or identification taken from an unlocked vehicle, contact the Loudoun Sheriff’s Office immediately and your bank.
