Veterans Day 2021: Loudoun County To Honor Military Personnel

Military veterans in Loudoun County and nationwide will be recognized on Veterans Day on Thursday, Nov. 11.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Loudoun County will be honoring the nation's veterans on Thursday, Nov. 11 at a series of events across the county.

In Leesburg, county officials will rededicate a World War I Memorial, while Loudoun County Public Schools will recognize the 211 veterans working in the school division and thank family and community members for their service at special events hosted by county schools.

Veterans Day, commemorated annually on Nov. 11, was first celebrated in 1919 to honor those who fought in World War I. It was initially called Armistice Day and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

The holiday’s origin is tied to the armistice, a temporary end of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany signed in France on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

It became Veterans Day in 1954, shortly following the end of the Korean War and less than a decade after World War II, after various veterans service organizations urged Congress to encompass veterans of all wars in their honor.

Veterans Day is somewhat related to, and sometimes mistaken for, Memorial Day, the federal holiday on the final Monday of May that is dedicated to those who have died while serving the United States.

On Thursday, Loudoun County will unveil a new plaque at the World War I Memorial containing an integrated list of all veterans from Loudoun County who died during their service in the war.

The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Veterans Day at the memorial, located on the Loudoun County courthouse grounds in Leesburg. Participants will include representatives of local veterans and community organizations, the Loudoun County Foreign War Memorial Trust Fund Advisory Committee, and members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.

The memorial bears a plaque with the names of 30 Loudoun County service members who fought and died in World War I. When the memorial was erected in 1921, during the “Jim Crow” era, the names were segregated according to race, with the names of three Black service members listed below two dividing lines that separated them from the names of the white service members.

On July 1, 2020, a new law took effect in Virginia permitting local governing bodies to remove, relocate, contextualize, or cover monuments or memorials for veterans of any war or conflict. The Board of Supervisors, with the support of the Foreign War Memorial Trust Fund Advisory Committee, authorized the replacement of the plaque to integrate the list of service members.

The advisory committee, composed of local veterans, members of American Legion Post 34, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1177, and chaired by retired Judge Thomas Horne, expressed their support for this project.

The new plaque is identical to the original, but integrates, in alphabetical order, the names of those who served. The county’s Department of General Services assisted the advisory committee with the production and installation of the new plaque.
