School Board moves forward on redistricting plan (pmg-va.com) — Bedford County School Board is working with consultants on a redistricting plan as enrollment declines unevenly across county schools, leaving some buildings full and others underused. Options will be presented Sept. 10, followed by town hall meetings and an October public hearing where residents can weigh in on potential boundary and facility changes.
   

2. Town Council holds short meeting but a long work session (pmg-va.com) — Bedford Town Council approved street closures for National Night Out on October 6 and adopted a new pavement marking plan for Longwood Avenue. Members also reviewed stalled work on the Old Yellow hotel project, costly Municipal Building repairs, a possible change to South Street’s one-way pattern, and whether to privatize the town’s trash transfer station.
   

3. Amherst man arrested in relation to June shooting that injured woman in Bedford (wset.com) — Bedford Police say a 41-year-old Amherst man has been arrested in connection with a June shooting that injured a 21-year-old woman at an apartment on Blue Ridge Avenue in Bedford. The victim was hospitalized in Roanoke and expected to recover, and investigators—assisted by Lynchburg Police, Amherst deputies, and U.S. Marshals—have charged the suspect with felony reckless handling of a firearm.
   

4. Broadband in Bedford: Leaders gather to celebrate federal funding (wfxrtv.com) — About 1,600 Bedford County homes and businesses are slated to gain broadband access thanks to new federal BEAD funding, celebrated this week at Tuck Farm in Moneta. Most locations will be served by local provider ZiTel’s fiber network, with remaining addresses covered by satellite services from SpaceX and Amazon to help close the county’s digital divide.
   

5. Escaped snake blamed for fire at Virginia middle school (thecooldown.com) — An escaped classroom snake at Forest Middle School in Bedford County knocked over a heat lamp, sparking an overnight fire that damaged eight classrooms and filled two wings with smoke. Firefighters from Bedford County and nearby agencies contained the blaze, navigated heavy smoke, and safely secured the 8‑foot snake, with no injuries reported.
