Arctic Blast: Burke Weather Timeline for Reaching '12 Below Zero'

Here's the weather timeline for the next few days.

A "polar vortex" is expected to reach much of the Northern Virginia area with dangerously low temperatures and a crippling wind chill up to 12 below zero degrees.

Here's the breakdown on when the extra-cold weather is expected to hit Northern Virginia in the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday Afternoon: The sun is shining, but the winds have already picked up (with gusts up to 40 mph). Highs are in the upper 30s.

Tonight: The temperature drops quickly, as a wind chill advisory begins at 6 p.m. with gusts reaching 45 mph. The temperature will fall to a low of around 7 above, with wind chill values running as low as 11 below after midnight.

Tuesday: The temperatures could climb to 16 above, but the winds will keep wind chill values as low as 12 below.

Tuesday Night: Temperatures struggle to stay in the double digest. 

Wednesday: Highs stay below freezing, but expected to reach 30, as winds die down to 5 mph.
