Armed Services Day

The United States recognizes Armed Services Day on the third Saturday in May.

Keeping America Strong and Secure: United in Purpose—Steadfast in Service is the theme for Armed Services Day 2012 on Saturday.

"On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days," according to the U.S. Department of Defense. "The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense."

Air Force
Founded on Sept. 18, 1947
Official Motto: “Fly-Fight-Win"
Official Song: "The Air Force Song" (First line is, "Off we go into the wild blue yonder ... ")

Army
Founded on June 14, 1775
Official Motto: "This We'll Defend"
Official Song: "The Army Goes Rolling Along"

Coast Guard
Founded on Jan. 28, 1915
Official Motto: "Semper Paratus" (Always Ready)
Official Song: "Semper Paratus"

Marine Corps
Founded on Nov. 10, 1775
Official Motto: "Semper Fidelis" (Always Faithful)
Official Song: "Semper Fidelis"

Navy
Founded on April 30, 1798
Official Motto: No official motto
Official Song: "Anchors Aweigh"
