Families in Burke and across Fairfax County can now mark the first day of school that is on the way later this summer.

BURKE, VA — Back-to-school planning has already begun in Burke and across Fairfax County, with calendars available to help parents prepare for the first day for Fairfax County Public Schools.

The first day of school for most students in Burke is Monday, Aug. 23. New guidance released by the CDC has recommended all students in K-12 settings wear a mask. Some school districts in northern Virginia, including Fairfax County Public Schools, have already updated their mask guidelines for the upcoming school year in accordance with CDC recommendations.

Here is the list of dates to know during the 2021-22 academic year:

  • First Day: Monday, Aug. 23
  • Student Holiday (Labor Day): Sept. 3-6
  • Student Holiday (Professional Development Day - Indigenous Peoples' Day): Monday, Oct. 11
  • End of First Quarter: Oct. 29 - Two-hour early release
  • Student Holiday (Teacher Work Day): Nov. 1-2
  • Veterans Day: Nov. 11 - Two-hour early release
  • Thanksgiving Break: Wednesday, Nov. 24 through Friday, Nov. 26
  • Winter Break: Monday, Dec. 20 through Friday, Dec. 30
  • Classes Resume: Monday, Jan. 3, 2022
  • Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday: Monday, Jan. 17
  • End of Second Quarter: Thursday, Jan. 20 - Two-hour early release
  • Student Holiday (Teacher Workday): Friday, Jan. 21
  • Student Holiday (Professional Development Day):Monday, Jan. 24
  • George Washington's Birthday and President's Day: Monday, Feb. 21
  • Two-hour early release: Thursday, March 3
  • Student Holiday (Professional Development Day): Friday, March 4
  • End of Third Quarter: Thursday, March 31 - Two-hour early release
  • Student Holiday (Teacher Workday): Friday, April 1
  • Spring Break: Monday, April 4 through Friday, April 8
  • Memorial Day: Monday, May 30
  • Last Day of School (Early Release): Friday, June 10

School Age Child Care (SACC) programs will be returning to all public schools in Fairfax County when the academic school year begins on Aug. 23. The county-run program provides care for students before and after school, as well as during school vacations.
