"It's the fourth time in Fairfax County in 2021 where a parent or a sibling has been killed by a son or a brother," said Police Chief Kevin Davis at a Tuesday news conference. "It's a disturbing trend indeed."
Police originally identified Bradley Lister as a person of interest, as he lived in the home and was unaccounted for. Further investigation found Lister had an extensive history with law enforcement and could be in the Baltimore area.
Working with Baltimore law enforcement and federal partners, police worked to find Lister and his vehicle. The U.S. Marshals Service took him into custody at a hospital in Baltimore on charges unrelated to the homicide. Lister will remain at the Baltimore Central Booking Intake Facility until extradition to Fairfax County.
Detectives believe Bradley Lister fled the home after the homicides and took several guns. The guns remain unaccounted for. Detectives are working with the Baltimore City Police Department and federal partners on the investigation related to the firearms.
The police department's victims services is assisting the family.
Davis acknowledged concerns about homicides and overall crime in the community. He noted overall crime is down 15 percent in Fairfax County, with declines in robberies, burglaries, sex offenses and auto thefts. However, homicides are up, including three double homicides in 2021.
"That has our full and undivided attention as an agency," said Davis. "Major Crimes Bureau and the hard-working detectives assigned to homicide have closed 71 percent of the murders that we've had this year. That doesn't take away from the fact that lives have been ripped away from family and friends and neighbors."
