Fill The Boot Campaign For MDA Returns In Fairfax County

Fairfax County's Fill the Boot campaign raised the most donations of any jurisdiction in the U.S. and Canada last year.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County Fire and Rescue firefighters and paramedics will once again participate in the Fill the Boot campaign and try to collect the most donations of any place in the U.S. and Canada. Last year, the county was number one for donations, which benefit the DC/VA Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Uniformed firefighters and paramedics will be out at controlled intersections across Fairfax County to collect donations from Friday, Aug. 30 to Monday, Sept. 2. A campaign kickoff was held Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. at Fire Station 14 – Burke, 9501 Old Burke Lake Road, Burke, VA.

The campaign is coordinated by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 2068 with assistance from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and Department of Public Safety Communications. This marks the 40th year Fairfax County Fire and Rescue has participated. IAFF has been involved for 65 years.

Fairfax County's $600,000 raised in 2018 was the top donation to the MDA in the U.S. and Canada. In 2017, Fairfax County's $631,000 in donations set an all-time nationwide record, according to Inside Nova. IAFF Local 2068 has raised over $6 million to date.

The donations support numerous efforts of the DC/VA Muscular Dystrophy Association. This includes the annual MDA Children’s Summer Camp, the MDA clinic at Georgetown University Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center, research at the National Institutes of Health and Georgetown University, and programs to help people with neuromuscular disease live, go to school and work independently.
