“Making more than 750,000 moves and hitting the 75-year mark are two very exciting milestones,” said Bud Morrissette, President and CEO. “We are grateful to all of the customers who continue to put their trust in us every day. “Reflecting back, there a so many experiences we have shared with our customers in taking them to their next step, it really is mind boggling what we have been fortunate enough to be part of… we are close to having moved it all.” Morrissette stated.
To celebrate their milestones in business, Interstate is presenting a unique collection of stories detailing the company’s growth, their community involvement and important events of the past 75 years on the site “75movingtales.com”.
“A quick glance at the stories demonstrates a tenured company that handles everything from the most delicate and priceless objects to treasured family belongings anywhere in the world with know-how and care,” said Morrissette. “Our goal is to share the unique experiences our company has been lucky enough to be a part of”
Few companies can match Interstate’s demonstrated proficiencies captured over the past 75 years. These include:
· In 1949, Interstate received its very first international moving contract. Interstate was tasked with shipping a grand piano and a Jeep. The Morrissette’s crated each item and, without forklifts, used wood chocks to prop the corners of each item until it was level to the back of the van and then rolled the crate into the van on pipes. Today, Interstate ships to 112 counties and works with more than 1500 qualified, independent firms specializing in household goods and relocations overseas.
· In 1967 – Top Hat Service was coined when Arthur E. Morrissette Senior was in the midst of planning his first television commercial. For the commercial he wore a tuxedo with tails, top hat and white gloves. His reasoning was to demonstrate to the public that Interstate valued impeccable service and attention to detail.
· Interstate built a training house in 1975 to teach its employees how to carefully move belongings. All candidates must undergo a rigorous 80-hour training program for new team members. The house is so effective that Fairfax Fire & Rescue has used it for training its first responders.
· In 1982, Interstate was the official mover for the U.S. pavilion for the World’s Fair in Knoxville, TN. Interstate handled numerous rare artifacts and fragile exhibits, including the Gossamer Penguin - the first solar-powered airplane. Other items included: the first telephone, an early locomotive, and a metal plow owned by Thomas Jefferson.
· In 1990, Interstate contacted the Northern Virginia chapter of Habitat for Humanity to donate 40 acres of land to the Lockheed Boulevard project. The project included the construction of eight townhomes that would become homes to low-to-middle income families seeking the American dream of homeownership.
- In 2016, Interstate was called upon to pack, document, and ship what is believed to be the only existing original copy of Thomas Edison’s silent film "Frankenstein." The film was shot on nitrocellulose-based film, discontinued in the early 1950's because it is highly flammable.
- In 2018, The US Marine Corps Band is conducting a national tour in October and they have tasked Interstate to move the band’s valuable and delicate instruments from city to city for the whole tour.
