Friday marks 19 years since the deadliest terror attack on American soil.

On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist-hijacked passenger planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The era-defining tragedies took the lives of 2,977 people, including more than 400 first responders.

Nearly two decades later — even in the midst of a global pandemic — Americans are coming together to honor those whose lives were snuffed out by terrorism.
