Resolution On Sexual Misconduct Adopted By FCPS School Board
The resolution comes after investigations into sexual misconduct at Lake Braddock and Oakton.

On Thursday, the Fairfax County School Board passed a resolution taking a firm stand against sexual misconduct and lead a culture change in the school system.
The resolution, introduced by board member, Ryan McElveen, cited a 2017-18 Fairfax County Youth Survey showing 14.2 percent of students reported being sexually harassed over the last year. The school system itself has grappled with recent cases, including the continuing federal investigation about how FCPS handled sexual harassment claims against a Lake Braddock girls' basketball coach. Meanwhile a former Oakton High School student is suing over the district's response to her claim of a sexual assault on a band trip.
FCPS encourages victims of sexual misconduct to report it to a trusted adult in their school. Students also receive required sexual misconduct prevention education in health and Family Life Education classes.

The resolution maintains the school district's policy is immediately investigating reports of sexual misconduct followed by the appropriate discipline. According to the FCPS student discipline guide, improper touching or sexual activity, sexual harassment and sexual assault can be suspendable offenses, but punishment is at the discretion of administrators.

All of us must do everything we can to confront the enduring and pervasive problem of sexual harassment and assault in society. That is why I’m sponsoring a resolution—to be voted on this Thursday—calling for collective action to end sexual misconduct in Fairfax County schools. pic.twitter.com/cu4jKCxNng
