Robinson Baseball Loses 11-1 to Chantilly

The Rams got hit hard early and couldn't recover.

The Robinson Rams suffered an 11-1 defeat to the Chantilly Chargers at home on Friday.

The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run slaughter rule. Rams junior starter Dan Cochrane was taken out of the game after 1.2 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits.

“Daniel didn’t have it tonight,” Rams head coach Jeff Ferrell said. “He didn’t get hit that hard, but he got hit.”

Juniors Brandon Waite and Michael Kann pitched in relief for the Rams and limited the damage to four runs on three hits.

Chargers sophomore Sonny Romine was responsible for most of the damage hitting in four runs in separate 2-RBI singles.

“I just stayed back and put the bat on the ball,” Romine said. “Caleb did great and we played great overall.”

The Chargers scored 11 runs on 11 hits with seven of those runs coming in the second inning.

The Rams did score first on Friday on a fielder’s choice hit by senior Alex Torres. They scattered five hits throughout the rest of the game, unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities.

Ferrell doesn’t take losses like Friday’s lightly. He also isn’t one to throw in the towel after a 10-run defeat.

“We will play again tomorrow,” Ferrell said optimistically. “You’ve just got to come out and give it another try.”

The Rams had two defensive errors in the game that were responsible for two runs in addition to a couple of base running mishaps.

“We ran on a ground ball to third when we shouldn’t have,” Ferrell said. “We continually shoot ourselves in the foot and we can’t recover from it. The games that we’ve lost, that has been the case.”

These are mistakes that can be fixed according to the Rams skipper.

“It is what it is,” Ferrell said. “You just keep trying, and learning by repetition.”
