The 2013 Virginia State Championships was held the weekend of March 8 – 10 at the Longwood University in Farmville, Va. We had about 46 players from GBW travel down to the State Championships competing with over 39 schools & more than 300 players from around the State. The State Chess Championships started with a Warm-up Blitz Championships on Mar. 8. The Main event was on Mar. 9- 10 when the children played four long games on Saturday and two rounds of long games on Sunday.

Greenbriar West Elementary School has a very strong Chess Club organized by the GBW PTA Chair Anand Dommalapati and the children are coached by Coach Paul Swaney. The children, parent volunteers and the Coach work very hard week after week, with some advanced players even practicing Chess in the GBW Chess Club twice a week!
The Coach and the PTA Chair would like to thank all the children for their tireless efforts in making this happen, as well as the principal, school staff and the PTA for their continued support to the GBW Chess Club.
A part of the state championship team (about 28 players) is working hard towards participating at the SuperNationals 2013 scheduled to happen at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN. The SuperNationals is a once in a 4-year Nationals event where there are about 5000 Children and K-12 School Teams participating and competing from around the Country. GBW’s win at the State Championships doesn’t stop. A team of 28 Chess club students and parents, as well as the Coach Paul Swaney will be travelling to the SuperNationals to face a stronger competition.
Congratulations to all the 46 Players for an excellent performance at the State Championships. The GBW Nationals Chess Team of 28 talented and strong players are looking forward for a fun, successful and more challenging competition at the 2013 SuperNationals!
