Driving On Route 29 In Fairfax? Expect Lane Closures Through Aug. 21

Lane closures on Route 29 in Fairfax are scheduled through Aug. 21 as crews continue a roadway widening project.

CENTREVILLE, VA — Drivers traveling along Route 29 in Fairfax should expect daytime and nighttime lane closures through Aug. 21 as work continues on a Virginia Department of Transportation widening project.

Weather permitting, single-lane closures will affect portions of Route 29 between Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive and Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive beginning Thursday night, Aug. 6. The closures are scheduled on Aug. 6-7, Aug. 9-14 and Aug. 17-21.

The work is part of VDOT's Route 29 widening project between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive.

Nighttime Closures

Northbound Route 29 between Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive and Clifton Road/Stringfellow Road will have single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the nights of Aug. 6 and Aug. 9-13.

Southbound Route 29 between Clifton Road/Stringfellow Road and Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive will have single-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the nights of Aug. 6 and Aug. 9-13.

Additional northbound closures between Hampton Forest Way/Meadow Estates Drive and Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the nights of Aug. 9-13. Southbound closures along the same segment are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. during those nights.

VDOT said all nighttime lane closures will occur under a Fairfax County noise waiver.

Daytime Closures

Northbound Route 29 between Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive and Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive will have single-lane closures from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, weekdays Aug. 10-14 and weekdays Aug. 17-21.

Southbound Route 29 between Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive and Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive will have single-lane closures from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, weekdays Aug. 10-14 and weekdays Aug. 17-21.

Drivers should expect delays during both daytime and nighttime work and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible.

The Route 29 widening project includes reconstructing and widening about 1.5 miles of roadway from four lanes to six, improving sight distance by correcting the roadway's vertical alignment, adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29 and improving connections to pedestrian and bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange.

According to VDOT, the project is expected to be completed later this summer.
