Sneak Peek: Capital Cabaret

Community production company prepares for the opening of its jazzy spring show.

The Alliance Theatre's upcoming Capital Cabaret performances premiere May 6.

The production will feature an eclectic mix of show tunes and popular songs from the 1950s through '80s, paired with fun costumes and dance routines. Capital Cabaret, now in its fourth year, usually performs well-known Broadway musicals. But May’s show is all new, offering a nostalgic soundtrack Director Joe Philipoom calls a “way back playback.”

The musical spectrum of Capital Cabaret’s spring performance ranges from disco to folk to rock and roll, featuring almost every genre except country. “The great thing about a cabaret, especially the one that we’re doing, is that there’s so much variety there’s bound to be something for everybody,” Philipoom said.

Philipoom encourages viewers to come to the show with an open mind and enjoy a selection of songs they might not otherwise be exposed to. “Give the different styles a chance,” he said, “I’m just hoping they’ll [the audience] walk out of there humming one of the songs that we’ve done.”
