Arlington County Declares Local Emergency

Arlington County officials declared a local emergency Friday in advance of Hurricane Irene.

The declaration was made in anticipation of heavy rain, damaging winds and storm surge possible with the approaching storm.

"This declaration provides for increased coordination with state resources, and provides increased administrative authority permitting the County to take necessary actions to prepare for and respond to the storm," according to a statement released by the county.

Several cities and counties have taken the same action, including nearby Alexandria.
