Downtown Clarendon Slated for Repaving Sunday and Monday Nights

Construction work going on now in the heart of Arlington's original downtown.

Thanks to the jackhammers and construction trucks, Clarendon seems like it's gotten louder during the day than the nights of its biggest parties.

Arlington is about 87 percent through its annual paving program, county spokeswoman Laura Smith told Patch.

The county is spending $7.5 million on its paving program this year.

The areas currently seeing work include two blocks on Wilson Boulevard, two blocks on Highland Street and one block on Fillmore Street. The construction had completely blocked the portion of Highland between Hard Times Cafe and the Clarendon Metro on Friday.

The work generally involves milling — removing the top layer of the old asphalt — some utility work and ultimately repaving.

Because the area currently affected sees so much traffic, county contractors plan to repave the Clarendon streets on Sunday and Monday nights if the weather allows, Smith said in an email.

Residents near areas targeted for repaving are usually notified by letter four to six weeks in advance, she said.
