Musical Gems of Mexico

Saturday May 9, 2015 | 7:30 PM Spectrum Theatre at Artisphere, Rosslyn, VA

With the support of the Mexican Cultural Institute, NCE celebrates great music of Mexican composers of the past and present

Celebrate Mother’s Day with NCE, our guest host, Hon James R. Jones and extraordinary Mexican music including the work of one of Mexico’s great living composers Eduardo Angulo. Featured on the program will be one of Angulo’s acclaimed compositions, Die Vogel (The Birds), for guitar and string quartet with internationally renowned guitarist Orlando Roman.

Praised by the Washington Post for being “Delightful...abundant in jovial wit,” National Chamber Ensemble’s society of internationally acclaimed musicians is redefining the meaning of “chamber music.”Also on the program will be the music of Manuel Ponce, the earliest internationally successful Mexican composer of classical music and popular songs and much more. A great way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and the conclusion of NCE’s 8th season.A reception for the whole audience follows the performance. The National Chamber Ensemble is especially delighted to welcome their guest host, Ambassador James R. Jones, former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and former Member of Congress from Oklahoma.

“When you encounter a piece which causes you to actually envision what you hear, the work of all artists has been done. Angulo’s work did just that, from the pizzicati in the strings-like birds being plucked from there sky to the shimmering notes from the upper strings on the ensemble mirroring their singing. It was a vision of majesty. Guitar soloist Orlando Roman played with stunning beauty and in the midst of the ensemble, commanded the attention of the audience by the exquisite nature of his art.” The Examiner
“National Chamber Ensemble is one of the musical gems of the entire Metro area...Their concerts are always fun and interesting, and the group presents a constantly changing program that includes every genre of music imaginable. The constants are that the music will be fabulous, the musicians will be wonderfully talented, and the atmosphere will always be intimate and welcoming to all.” DCMetroTheaterArts
