Photo of the Day: Special Olympics Torch Comes to Arlington

Torch will be carried more than 42 miles to Quantico,

After a brief ceremony, the official torch of the Virginia Special Olympics was lit once again today, this time at the Iwo Jima Memorial, and handed off to the Arlington County Police Department to be carried proudly along the George Washington Parkway.

Every summer, law enforcement men and women from across the commonwealth carry the Flame of Hope to raise awareness and financial donations for the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games. Over the last several days the flame has been passed throughout southwest Virginia, run through Harrisonburg, and now is being passed between local police agencies along the 42.2-mile path from Rosslyn to Marine Corps Base Qauntico.

The eight-day, 2,000-mile torch run culminates Friday at the Special Olympics opening ceremonies in Richmond.
