Update: Arrest Made Following Weekend Altercation in Cherrydale

Update (5:05 p.m. Monday): Police have arrested Andrew Lee, 24, of North Carolina, in connection with this incident, spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

Lee has been charged with attempted malicious wounding and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He is being held without bond.

Lee was drunk at the time of the alleged attack, Sternbeck said.

According to information police released Monday, Lee allegedly struck the homeless man with his vehicle while attempting to flee — as opposed to targeting him with the car.

Original story: The Arlington County Police Department used dogs and a helicopter to search for a man following a late-night fight in the Cherrydale community this weekend.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, officers arrived in the 2000 block of North Kenmore Street to find a homeless man recovering from an attack, police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.

The victim told police he had been sleeping in his car when an unidentified man jumped on the vehicle, waking him.

The victim got out of the vehicle, and the man attacked him, Sternbeck said. During the altercation, the attacker somehow ended up in the vehicle, which he started, ran over the victim, and then crashed about 100 feet away, Sternbeck said.

The suspect jumped out of the vehicle, and the fight continued. The victim pulled out a knife and stabbed his attacker in the chest, causing him to run away.

Police arrived, and dogs and a helicopter were deployed to search for the suspect, Sternbeck said.

The suspect was eventually found at his home and he was taken to a local hospital, Sternbeck said. During the night, the suspect's girlfriend had called police to report him missing.

Sternbeck said he wasn't aware of any charges filed at this time.
