Rash of Car Break-ins Reports at Market Common

Tenants at the Residences at the Market Common Clarendon were sent a notice by the facility management recently over a rash of car vehicle break ins in the parking garage.

“We want you to know that we share in your concern and frustration over these events,” reads an email from the facility's property management organization, Bozzuto Management Company along with CBRE, which manages the retail portion of market commons. "The best way for us to combat this challenge is for all of us – managers of the apartments, retail and garage spaces and resident and retail tenants alike, to work together."

The letter goes on to say that the complex has beefed up security at the parking garage on 2800 Clarendon Blvd., which includes expanded hours for security patrols. They also are hiring an outside security consultant to make recommendations.

Messages left for the Arlington County Police Department on the matter were not returned, but a look at the publicly released police incident reports show a handful of car related incidents in the county in the last few months: 

• On Oct. 4, multiple vehicles were broken into on the 1200 block of N. Garfield Street sometime between 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 11:17 a.m. on Oct. 4.
• Sometime between 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 13, someone the windows on multiple vehicles on the 4900 block of S. Chesterfield St.
• A 19-year-old Fairfax man was charged with larceny and unlawfully entering a vehicle after police said he broke into multiple cars on the 200 block of N. Liberty St. The incident occurred sometime between 4 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 7:45 a.m. on Aug. 28.

Market Common management also gave residents advice on avoiding vehicle break ins, including advising drivers to always keep doors and windows closed.

Arlington County police will host several crime prevention forums in the next few weeks, and will make a stop near Clarendon at Key Elementary School at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1.
